From Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire, AJ Banal, Z Gorres, Gerry Peñalosa, and Boom-boom Bautista who give credits to our country.

Z Gorres is rapidly becoming one of the country's finest boxers. In his last battle, he got an 8th round TKO win against Eric Ortiz - successfully showing the world his rare power. And last Sunday, February 2, 2008, he battled against the former IBF flyweight champion Darchinyan at Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu. I am confident that Z Gorres will win the battle against him. Both warriors went at each other for most of the wild, 12-round bout spoiled by debris-throwing incident right in the opening round when referee Lance Revill ruled what was supposed to be a slip as a knockout against the 25-year-old pride of Mandaue City.

After erroneously giving Gorres a mandatory count in the 1st round of what appeared to a clear slip, the crowd began to go wild and pelted the ring with coins and plastic bottles repeatedly. After settling down, Gorres caught Darchinyan with a clean left hook to the face that sent the cocky Australian down to the canvass in the second round. Unfortunately, the Filipino failed to put the pressure on and a headbutt in the sixth round wounded Gorres' forehead.

After 12 rounds of boxing it seems obvious that Darchinyan won the battle for Z Gorres struggles a lot just to survive the 12-rounder fight. The irony with the decisions where when the Filipino Judge Jonathan Davis had it 114-112 in favor of Darchinyan, Montol Suriyachand saw it in favor of Gorres, 113-112, while Australian Cec Perkins declared it a draw, 113-113.

The split draw was the first in Darchinyan's professional career. The former IBF flyweight champion, who lost his title to Filipino Nonito Donaire last year, owns a 29-1 record, including 23 KOs.

Although I am proud that Gorres fought it until the 12 round that failed Darchinyan a TKO win, I am convinced that one of my favorite boxer did not make it and they deserve a rematch with a better referee.
